Parks and green areas

For strolling, studying in the sun or sports, Lyon Metropole has no less than 14 large parks, 31 gardens, 27 hiking trails and over 600 city squares. You’ll have a hard time choosing between Tête d’Or Park, Parilly Park, Lacroix-Laval Park and Blandan Park.

Green routes

Lyon Métropole develops green routes and connections so that you can bike and walk with peace of mind. You can use all types of non-motorized transport for travel. Take advantage of these areas for relaxation found throughout the territory and find the list of “green” routes on the La Ville à Vélo site.

Don’t forget Vélo’v for your non-motorized travel! Bikes are available throughout the area for short-term rentals.

Lyon, a sportive city

In institutes of higher education and in the city, there are lots of possibilities for sports activities, as well as for attending major sports events!

 

Sports at the university

Each university has a SUAPS sports service, and sports offices are frequently found in the schools. Ask about this at your particular establishment.

Your school may also have signed an agreement with these sports services; feel free to ask for more information.

Several student associations also propose sports at very attractive rates: look for them in the LyonCampus association list (french only).

 

A few student sports events in Lyon:

24 Hours of lNSA is France’s largest student sports event, with all kinds of races (inline skates, bikes, hikes) on the sports section of the program.

The Game of Gones is a multidisciplinary tournament organized by IAE and INSA that combines traditional sports with more unusual ones (quidditch, sumo, etc.).

Throughout the year, you can follow the IAE Sport'Inov and Lyon 3 sports challenges, as well as numerous student sports events organized by AS Lyon 1

 

High-level-athlete students

Participate in competitions: find regulations and all other information on sports competitions in higher education on the university sports information site for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

High-level athletes: some establishments adapt schedules so that you can train while continuing your studies. Depending on whether you are a high-level university or regional athlete, you can obtain extra points or replace a course with a sports activity. Ask your establishment about this when you register.

Sports services and clubs

There are more than 2,000 sports clubs in Lyon Metropole, representing over 200 different sports.

In Lyon, the Office of Sports (french version only) provides information on each arrondissement, which will make it easier for you to find a nearby activity.

Every municipality has an office of sports, and you can look on your local municipal site for information on the various sports offered.

Vibrate for numerous sports events hosted in Lyon

Several sports events take place in Lyon Metropole. Whether you prefer the bleachers or the playing field, you’ll always find an activity!

 

Running

The Lyon Urban Trail and the Lyon Urban Trail by Night will take you on a tour of the city, with steps and climbs. These emblematic races combine excursion and exertion in a daytime or nighttime version.

RunInLyon is the Lyon version of the RunIn running festival that takes place in several cities, and various races are proposed.

Saintélyon is a nighttime rally between Saint-Etienne and Lyon organized as a race or relay. For the most resistant, the full run covers 81 kilometers!

Jog in the City proposes two circuits to support charity, with an arrival at the OL Park in Décines!

The Course du Cœur (Heart Race) is organized each year by Lyon students with the goal of donating profits to a charity.

For thirty years, the Foulées de Villeurbanne has proposed several races of different lengths, including free circuits, to encourage everyone to participate in sports.

Courir pour Elles (Run for Her) is a race for women only, with profits going to an association that combats breast cancer. The main race is organized in May of each year, with several variations throughout the year: Dance for Her, Bike for Her, etc.

 

Biking

Lyon Free Bike proposes four circuits, from simple to complex, for traveling on a two-wheeler through the city, starting at €15 per circuit.

Inter VTT at Miribel-Jonage proposes several circuits, a festive village and mountain bike activities, at €7 per circuit for students.

Two inline skate loops that are free of charge and open to all leave from Bellecour every Friday at 8:45 p.m. The Lugdunum Roller Contest proposes various circuits for inline skates, roller skates and razor scooters, starting at €20 per circuit.

 

Supporting

Are you a fan rather than a player? Metropolitan Lyon has a number of major sports teams, such as the OL (soccer), Lou Rugby, Asvel (basketball), the Lyon Hockey Club, along with many other great women’s and men’s clubs for you to support!

Lyon also hosts major worldwide sports events. Following the Women’s World Cup in the summer of 2019, with semi-finals and finals at the OL Stadium, Lyon will host the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2023.
